Creature Feature!

After a RAINY few days, it was wonderful to get back into nature with GFT’s Summer Series featuring “Creature Feature”!  Before our hike, we read “Everybody Needs a Rock” by Byrd Baylor and discussed how the children felt about the poet using a rock as his topic.  It just so happened to be perfect timing as many of them were enjoying the poem atop a huge boulder!

We (well, most of us!) were treated to a sighting of a doe and her calf towards the middle of our hike~the children LOVED it!  We took advantage of the shade after a downhill segment of the hike to enjoy another poem, “Ode to my Socks,” by Pablo Neruda.  The children shared how they would NOT want to be wearing those cozy, wool socks during our very hot summer.   Throughout the hike, we also saw how the intensity of the recent rain changed the landscape and trails that we had been accustomed to hiking, and some of the children enjoyed tromping through the newly-made streams on our way back.

When we returned from the hike. Ms. Jennifer lead the children in the creation of their own mini poem books.  The children then enjoyed lunch/snack and a rousing game of “tag’ before it was time to move on.

Our next event for GFT will be National Night Out at St. Thomas’ on Tuesday night, August 8 from 6:00-9:00 pm.  There will be loads of other fun, kid-related events there.  So, if you’re interested in checking us out, come on by to say hi!  We can’t wait to meet you!
